The Master Bathroom: Tub or no tub?

The Master Bathroom: Tub or no tub?

The master bathroom is one of the most personal spaces in your home. So, as you’re contemplating the tub or no-tub dilemma for your bathroom remodel, worry less about the current remodeling trends and think more about what’s right for you. Making the space unique to your lifestyle and personal preferences goes a long way toward your ultimate satisfaction with the finished product. The golden rule: Design for the way you live.

The Shower-Only Bathroom.

The footprint of the traditional shower is expanding, in part, because many new bathroom designs are void of a tub, which leaves more room for a grand-size shower area. Some ideas for making the shower a luxe experience:

  • Custom, floor-to-ceiling tile
  • Built-in seating and niches
  • Multiple showerheads, with one hand-held
  • Steam shower for spa effect
  • Frameless glass doors or no enclosure

The Tub and Shower Combination Bathroom.

If you enjoy relaxing in the tub, there are a host of options for creating a Zen space that includes the best of both worlds with a shower and bathtub combo. In fact, combination bathroom design has come a long way. It used to be that the tub and shower were installed as one “package”—this mindset limited the design and layout.

Today, you’ve got many options: Bathtub fixtures make fabulous design statements, whether you lean toward a sleek and contemporary piece or a classic iron tub. Consider placing the tub, incorporating it into an open layout that includes a separate shower area. Use tile to unify the entire space and create a harmonious effect.

Because most new-design tub decks are smaller, the tub takes up less space in the bathroom, which affords more area for installing a shower, vanities and more.

The Great Escape.

Tub or no tub, today’s master bathroom has become an oasis. This is the space where you can relax and unwind at the end of the day, so add design extras to make the room even more comfortable and convenient for everyday living:

  • Heated floors make the space cozy during the cold winter months
  • A TV installed inside a cabinet or on swing-arm is easy to view from different angles
  • Custom cabinetry creates a linen closet and extra storage
  • A 36” vanity height provides easy, comfortable accessibility

Take it personally: Follow your own lead and make the master bathroom uniquely yours. You’ll be glad you did.

Tub and shower combo: options: freestanding tub that can be sleek and contemporary or a classic claw foot tub. Consider the placement of the tub, whether it is freestanding, built into a tub deck or part of the shower area.

The American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) recently released a new white paper that discusses the use of aluminum in high-performing building enclosures. AMC-2-26, “Aluminum in High-Performing Building Enclosures,” is now available in the AAMA online store as a complimentary download. “This white paper was needed in order to educate and inform the marketplace about the energy advantages of using aluminum fenestration,” said Elizabeth Cotton (Kawneer), chair of the AMC Marketing Committee. “With today's technology, these products can achieve current and foreseeable stringent codes requirements in an efficient and innovative manner, as well as achieving credits through green building certification programs.” The document addresses aluminum extrusions used in the manufacture of entrances, storefront framing, curtain walls, windows and skylight fenestration systems. Aluminum products can be sustainable due to the recyclability of aluminum that helps conserve energy ...

WeWork takes on a construction management app provider

WeWork, the New York-based urban workspace designer and redeveloper that’s one of the fastest-growing companies in the U.S., has acquired Fieldlens, a six-year-old producer of construction management applications that allow for more efficient on-site communications. Most construction projects “are broken social networks,” says Doug Chambers, Fieldlens’ founder. His company’s app helps make a jobsite environment more like Facebook or a social feed, where everyone on site is communicating in real time, all the time. An example Chambers gives is a project manager who is walking a site, and using the app on his smartphone to send observations, pictures, confirmations, and directives to other crew members. Chambers says that on one jobsite in Buffalo, N.Y., the Fieldlens app is facilitating 1,000 interactions per day, on average, among the 80 to 100 workers on site. “Fieldlens lets people get back to work,” and not get bogged down on a lot of administrative and paperwork duties, says Cha...
